RUNWAY REPORT: Elsie Katz Couture Spring '08 Collection

It was a simply delightful garden party at Donna Baxter's Elsie Katz Couture collection last night. Designs in every flower you can imagine, from roses to lilies to tulips and cherry blossoms, took center stage – and you’d be hard pressed to find a lovelier bouquet.

Baxter's collection was by far the most fun I’ve had at LA Fashion Week this year. Her designs were inspired by Antoine de Saint-Exupery’s “The Little Prince”, about a small boy from a tiny planet who loves a beautiful but tempestuous rose. This rose served as the foundation for her collection, with fresh, vibrant and innovative designs. Her subtle use of the floral theme was truly beautiful - with cascading sequins and colored crystals, and the use of silk, chiffon and lots and lots of taffeta. Her cocktail dresses were party-perfect, complete with detailed petals and hand-formed blossom embellishments.

There were so many wonderful pieces in this collection, I’m hesitant to choose my favorite flower out of the bunch. She opened the show with a stunningly gorgeous strapless violet dress with tiny sequins and crystals. The real show stopper was a gold cocktail dress dripping with tansy crystal cascades. The colors she utilized throughout her designs were beautifully rich, saturated colors you’d only find in the most luscious of gardens. The detail Baxter included in the bridal gown were stunning hand rolled beaded petals on duchesse satin. “Toutes les petites fleurs” – truly an ultra-feminine, delicate approach to clothing that is both classically elegant, and very, very fun.
