Advice: Holiday Fashion

Here's a fashion question from one of our fabulously chic readers:

Dear Fashion Source,

The holidays are coming up which means lots of parties – and I don’t have a thing to wear! What can you recommend for something that can be worn to several parties, from dressier occasions to more casual? I’d like something I can get more than one use out of.

MY ADVICE:
The holidays are a great excuse to dress up and play up your look, but I can understand the need for an outfit that works on many levels, and for many occasions. Here are a few suggestions:

Buy a few pieces you can mix and match, which will enable you to dress up or dress down (but still look smokin’ of course!) very easily. You probably already have a few basic pieces you can use, such as a great fitting pair of black trousers or a knee-length pencil skirt. You can pair these with a dressy top in a vibrant color – (note: I try to stay away from wearing red to a Christmas party, because really, who wants to be a cliché?) – but you can still be festive by wearing muted tones of gold and silver and not end up looking like a Christmas tree. Check out this gorgeous lace embellished silk top from Yaya Aflalo or accent a monochromatic ensemble with a sexy pair of gold pumps.

To achieve a more casual, yet sophisticated look, pair your black trousers with a crisp white button- up shirt, but avoid the “going to the office look” by accessorizing with a great statement necklace, like this amazing faceted crystal necklace from Kenneth Jay Lane.

Another option is to wear a cocktail dress, but break away from the good ‘ol LBD standby. I’m a huge fan of the shift dress partly because it’s extremely wearable and versatile. Dress up a casual shift dress by pairing it with a pair of paten leather Mary Jane’s and opaque tights. Or dress it way down with a pair of slim dark wash jeans and a pair of pumps…I promise you’ll still look super chic, even in jeans. I adore this dress by Alice + Olivia, stylishly detailed with tiny rosettes or this plum colored number by ECI.

Most importantly, ALWAYS wear clothing that you feel the most comfortable in, and no, we don’t mean your pj’s, but clothing you aren’t squirming in, tugging or pulling at. The key to fabulous fashion is finding styles that make you feel like the goddess you are!

Hope this helps…stay stylish, and happy holidays.

xo.
